Rev. Dr. Sabu Varghese was born and raised in a traditional Pentecostal family in Arabi, a small village in Kannur district of Kerala state in India. His parents (Pr. K.V Varghese & Mrs. Leelamma Varghese), who are in full time ministry, were very keen in training and nurturing their three children in the fear of the Lord. Both his brother and sister along with their families are in full time ministry.
A systematic Christian Education through Sunday school and exposure to involvement in ministry through the youth activities, played a key role in his spiritual growth. He accepted Christ Jesus as his personal Savior and Lord at the age of twelve and took water baptism two years later. Upon completion of high school, he went to Karnataka to pursue his secular as well as theological education. In his final year of Bachelor’s education, he sensed a definite call of the Lord and committed his life for full time ministry. He worked as an Associate Staff worker and as a College Lecturer simultaneously for over a year and continued his theological education at Bethel Bible College, Punalur. Holy Spirit baptism and the systematic theological training gave him a unique vision for the ministry. After Graduating, he went back to Malabar and served as an Associate/Youth minister at Central Assembly of God Church. During the occasional absence of the Lead Pastor, he assumed the full responsibility of the church with a membership of 200+.
He got married in 1999 and came to United States in July 2000. Shortly after arriving US, he joined Westminster Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, PA, and later, he joined Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia to pursue his doctoral studies (2001 -2009). During this time, God also helped him to travel to different places both nationally and internationally as a preacher and missionary evangelist. In response to a definite lead to pioneer a church, he started Philadelphia House of Worship, a multi-ethnic Pentecostal church for the community along with one of his close friends, who was a pastor in Philadelphia, PA.
He assumed the responsibility as Senior Pastor of Grace Pentecostal Church, Philadelphia, in the year of 2009 and served in the same capacity till June 2017. During this tenure, God in His rich mercy and favor, allowed the church to grow both spiritually and in membership, from 44 families to a membership strength of 77+ families. It has always been his passion to see the church growing with new souls. In the past, several people and families from various denominational christian faiths have come to the Lord and have become part of the church. The Lord also helped him to strengthen the Youth, Christian Education and Young Couples ministry of the church and now they play an integral part in the ministry. He organized several mission trips to various countries and also involved in many city wide ministries.
God has blessed him with a great woman of God as his wife. She has committed her life to serve the Lord during her High School years and she comes from a similar traditional Pentecostal family.
